Explore the best of Athens’ architecture on April 1st and 2nd, 2023, at Open House Athens marks its 10th anniversary. With dozens of buildings opening their doors, 500 volunteers are ready to guide you through the city’s diverse architecture.
Open House Athens is a free two-day architectural guided tour for the public, run entirely by volunteers who aim to bring people closer to Athens’ architecture. It offers an exciting opportunity to explore the city, see familiar streets from a different perspective, and appreciate the architecture that surrounds us.
The event includes guided tours of both public and private buildings, modern and historic sites, monuments, museums, theatres, residences, and workplaces. There are two tours available: Open Tours and Open Walks. Open Tours, the well-established two-day free architectural tours, allow you to explore buildings and sites of architectural interest in the city without reservation. On the other hand, Open Walks take you through the Byzantine architecture of Athens or the mansions of Kifissia, depending on your choice.
In addition to the tours, Open House Athens features a series of parallel activities that start a few days earlier. Guided Tours – Made in Athens takes you to studios and factories where creators and producers themselves guide you. Open School offers guided tours for organized educational groups at Made in Athens sites, Open Tours buildings, and Open Walks routes. However, booking is required for this activity, and priority will be given on a first-come, first-served basis due to limited places.
For those who cannot attend in person, Open House Athens has something for you too. Open Office is a series of interviews with Athenian architects distinguished for their contemporary work, which will premiere on April 3, 2023. The videos will be uploaded to the Open House Athens YouTube channel.
Open House Athens also holds several competitions for everyone. Design the Poster is a competition for poster design with the prize of a scholarship to one of Vakalo Art & Design College’s one-year workshops. Open Photo is a photo competition on Instagram, while Open Vote is a competition to select the audience’s favorite tour. Open Your Map is an Instagram photo competition that involves visitors’ sealed maps, while Open Your Portfolio is a portfolio competition with a prize of a scholarship to the Master of Architecture Design program at Vakalo Art & Design College.
